چکیده

Reasoning by analogy is an important component of common sense reasoning whose formalization has undergone recent improvements with the logical and algebraic study of the analogical proportion. The starting point of this study considers analogical proportions on a formal context. We introduce analogical complexes, a companion of formal concepts formed by using analogy between four subsets of objects in place of the initial binary relation. They represent subsets of objects and attributes that share a maximal analogical relation. We show that the set of all complexes can be structured in an analogical complex lattice and give explicit formulae for the computation of their infimum and supremum.

Looking for Analogical Proportions in a Formal Concept Analysis Setting

Categorization and analogical reasoning are two important cognitive processes, for which there exist formal counterparts (at least they may be regarded as such): namely, formal concept analysis on the one hand, and analogical proportions (modeled in propositional logic) on the other hand. This is a first attempt aiming at relating these two settings. The paper presents an algorithm that takes a...

Testing Analogical Proportions with Google using Kolmogorov Information Theory

Analogical reasoning is considered as one of the main mechanisms underlying creativity. “Thinking out of the box” allows the paradigm shift essential to a creative process. More common is the concept of analogical proportion (“2 is to 4 as 4 is to 8”) which can be described within an algebraic framework. When it comes to concepts (“engine is to the car as heart is to the human”), we need to inv...

Analogical Model Formulation for AP Physics Problems

One of the least studied problems in qualitative reasoning is computing structural descriptions, i.e., how to move from the unruly, broad set of concepts used in everyday life to a concise, formal vocabulary of abstractions that can be used effectively for problem solving. This paper describes how learning by analogy can be used to solve this problem in the domain of AP physics problems. The sy...

Using Analogical Representations for Mathematical Concept Formation

We argue that visual, analogical representations of mathematical concepts can be used by automated theory formation systems to develop further concepts and conjectures in mathematics. We consider the role of visual reasoning in human development of mathematics, and consider some aspects of the relationship between mathematics and the visual, including artists using mathematics as inspiration fo...

Automatic activation of categorical and abstract analogical relations in analogical reasoning.

We examined activation of concepts during analogical reasoning. Subjects made either analogical judgments or categorical judgments about four-word sets. After each four-word set, they named the ink color of a single word in a modified Stroop task. Words that referred to category relations were primed (as indicated by longer response times on Stroop color naming) subsequent to analogical judgmen...
